Salaries slip for IROs but not department heads

Pay for IR heads in 2016 was broadly consistent with 2015, but salaries for IROs and IR managers fell. That’s according to the IR Magazine Global Salary Report 2016, produced in association with Bloomberg, which looks at salaries and bonuses paid to IR practitioners, both IR heads and IROs.

IR bonus levels in 2016This report, based on 741 responses, finds the median salary for heads of IR in 2016 was in the $150,000-$199,999 bracket, the same as in 2015. The median salary for IROs or IR managers, however, dropped a range to $75,000-$99,999.

Median pay for North American IR heads remained in the $200,000-$249,999 range for the fifth consecutive year. One third of IR chiefs in this region earned a base salary of at least $250,000. European IR heads had a median salary of $150,000- $199,999, matching the global norm. The median salary for European IROs remained at $75,000-$99,999. In Asia, median salaries for both IR heads and IROs/IR managers were one bracket lower than the global norm.

The vast majority of IR heads and IROs/IR managers received a bonus on top of their salary in 2016. This amounted to nine in 10 heads of IR and 82 percent of IROs/ IR managers. The 90 percent of IR heads who got a bonus received an average of 35 percent of their base salary. IROs/IR managers typically received a lower bonus, with the 82 percent who did get a bonus being rewarded with an average of 21 percent of their base salary.
