Best IR website: Why BASF won in Europe

‘Fantastic website – all the things I want to see are easy to find,’ said one judge of BASF’s award-winning IR website. Finding the information you want might seem like a rather basic and straightforward requirement but if your IR website isn’t getting that right, you’ve got a long way to go. With its state-of-the-art website, however, BASF is getting that right – and a lot more on top, including a dedicated IR Twitter feed with more than 3,500 followers. The chemicals giant has even persuaded two board members to get on board with social media and makes use of StockTwits and SlideShare.

But the website is where it all comes together, with an activity stream covering everything from press releases to information on IR events and the @basf_ir Twitter feed. It uses its social channels ‘to draw attention to special topics like events, new publications or updated analyst estimates’, adding that ‘as these platforms are directly linked to Bloomberg and Reuters, we can address our main target group via social media as well.’ It also does in-house media monitoring, allowing it to react quickly if necessary.

Much of this is possible thanks to BASF’s dedicated IRO in the team responsible for the IR website and social media, something the Ludwigshafen-headquartered firm says is ‘especially important during reporting’ when all hands are on deck to get everything updated.

‘Our goal is that every stakeholder can quickly find relevant and current news on BASF directly on the IR landing page,’ says the firm – something it has certainly achieved. It notes, however, that ‘you do not need fancy tools to have a good IR website. You need resources in the team [and] somebody who feels responsible for the online content.’
