PTT Global Chemical leads South East Asia nominations

Thailand’s state-owned PTT and subsidiaries PTT Global Chemical and PTT Exploration & Production (PTTEP) dominate the short lists for the IR Magazine Awards – South East Asia 2018.

With a total of nine nominations, PTT Global Chemical tops the list, though PTTEP is on six lists, and parent company PTT is also nominated for two awards – in each case competing with at least one of its subsidiary firms.

Last year, PTT Global Chemical won the award for most progress in IR (a category it is short-listed in again this year). Among the nine awards the Bangkok-headquartered firm is up for in 2018 are the coveted best overall investor relations (large cap) gong, and a best investor relations officer (large cap) nod for Jittasak Soonthornpan.

PTT Global Chemical will be going head to head with Thai energy firm Thaioil in four out of the five categories Thaioil is nominated for – including best overall investor relations and best investor relations officer.

In fact, Thai companies have so many nominations this year that of the 24 firms short-listed for the four categories covering best overall investor relations (large cap and small & mid cap) and best investor relations officer (large cap and small & mid-cap), 13 hail from Thailand.

There are other notable mentions from outside Thailand, of course, such as Philippine firm Ayala Land with seven nominations. Ayala Corporation, the publicly listed holding company for the interests of the Ayala Group and the country’s oldest and largest conglomerate founded during Spanish colonial rule, notches up another two for the group.

This year sees 22 trophies in the awards by research section and nine awards by nomination, including a four-strong short list in the rising star category. These are Esme Law of AirAsia Group, Chairath Sivapornpan from B Grimm Power, Wanida Boonpiraks of Global Power Synergy and James Bywater from Hi-P International.

The judging panel for this year’s awards by nomination comprises:

•    Richard Jones, head of IR, corporate communications, sustainability & human resources Bangkok at Indorama

•    Professor Roy Ling, managing director at RL Capital Management

•    Jeannie Ong, soon to step down as chief strategic partnership officer after 17 years with StarHub

•    Garnet Roach, senior reporter at IR Magazine

•    Harold Woo, president of the Investor Relations Professionals Association (Singapore).
