Asian investors optimistic on economic outlook

Asian investors are upbeat when it comes to economic optimism, ranking the second highest globally, according to a new survey.

The latest UBS Global Wealth Management quarterly Investor Sentiment survey reveals that in Asia, high net worth (HNW) individuals and business owners are optimistic and eyeing a range of opportunities.

Globally, Latin American investors are the most optimistic in their economic outlook (76 percent) and are the most bullish on their region’s own stocks – 77 percent – with Asia ranking second in the world at 60 percent in terms of economic optimism, with 56 percent expressing optimism in their local market outlook.

When it comes to risks, the top three concerns among Asian investors are a global trade war (47 percent), the country’s long-term competitiveness (43 percent) and cyber-security (43 percent).

Nevertheless, 67 percent of Asian respondents see a diversified approach to investing – rather than selling out of their portfolios – as a way to manage ongoing risks.

A majority also express interest in a diverse range of opportunities.

Some of the key areas of focus include: sustainable investing (59 percent) yield or income generation (56 percent) and thematic investing –such as medtech and fintech – on 54 percent.

Globally, sentiment also improved with the proportion of investors optimistic about the global economy remaining unchanged on 51 percent, while the proportion of investors planning to invest more increased from 42 percent to 46 percent.
