Royal Dutch Shell’s rising star: Winning over the City from the Netherlands

Heading up the investor relations program at the UK’s oil giant Royal Dutch Shell and making an impression in the City, the winner of this year’s rising star award, Georges Menane, is not only new to the profession but also isn’t based in the UK.

Georges Menane, Royal Dutch Shell

   Georges Menane,
   Royal Dutch Shell

A ‘deep oil and gas expert’, with 20 years’ industry experience, Menane’s first year in the job – he took on IR at Shell at the end of 2016 – saw him ‘deliver a program covering 90 of the top 100 holders, develop strong relationships with the sell side’ and add a number of new events along specific business lines, according to the award entry submitted on his behalf.

When Shell conducted an in-depth perception study to look back over 2017, it included comments from European investors such as: ‘[IR at Shell] is fantastic. It has been up there with the best I see in the sector’, and ‘the management day was of the highest quality and one of the most informative ones I have seen in this sector’. High praise indeed.

So what’s Menane’s secret? His strategy is simple: knowledge, relationships, events – and, it seems, a lot of travel between London and the Netherlands. It might not be an obvious location from which to build relationships with the City but, with almost weekly trips to London during his first year in the job, Menane has also showed a dedication to IR.

And while he might be new to the profession, his background lends him weight with investors and analysts alike. ‘He is not just ‘broadcasting’ the IR message,’ writes his champion. ‘He is telling a story backed up by many examples from the front line. It is clear he owns and lives the Shell story – be it on strategic or very technical financial topics.’
