How the UAE’s capital markets are seeking the spotlight

As the UAE solidifies its position as a leading global financial hub, its capital markets are thriving like never before. Amid economic and geopolitical uncertainties, the UAE’s resilience continues to stand out, attracting investors looking for stable, long-term growth opportunities. In Q2 2024 alone, the broader Middle East and North Africa IPO market, including the UAE, raised $2.64 bn, setting it apart from global markets that have experienced a slowdown.

The UAE’s capital markets have gained nearly $5.79 bn in capitalization this year, thanks to successful IPOs from companies like Spinneys, NMDC Energy and Parkin. This momentum is part of a broader strategy to double market value to $1.63 tn, with diverse sectors such as retail, healthcare and transport benefiting from favorable conditions.

While investor appetite for UAE IPOs remains strong, the optimism for future listings is even higher. According to Edelman Smithfield’s 2024 UAE Investor Pulse Survey, 84 percent of investors express keen interest in future IPOs.

Transparency, trust and growth

For investors, transparency and sustainable growth are non-negotiable. The UAE has further cemented investor confidence by implementing an excellent, globally aligned bookbuilding process, earning the trust of investors – 71 percent of whom express confidence in its transparency and efficacy.

Additionally, 65 percent of investors highlight the importance of clear communication from companies, emphasizing the need for issuers to clearly explain their growth strategies and how they plan to use IPO proceeds. This level of transparency ensures investors have confidence in the long-term success of the companies they invest in.

Investors are increasingly prioritizing companies that focus on organic growth and long-term financial targets, and this is further evidenced by 88 percent of respondents acknowledging that understanding a company’s three to five-year financial goals is crucial for their investment decisions.

Corporate governance is also front and center for investors. The survey reveals that 84 percent of investors prefer companies with diverse boards, particularly those with expertise in cyber-security and ESG issues. Additionally, 67 percent of respondents expect companies to move toward more open governance models, such as annual elections for all board members, within five to 10 years of going public.

One key advantage for the UAE is its dual-exchange system with the Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange and Dubai Financial Market, which caters to a variety of sectors and investor profiles. Around two thirds of investors agree that this system provides unique benefits, broadening opportunities for companies to go public and fueling continued growth in listings.

The road ahead

Looking toward the rest of 2024 and beyond, the UAE’s IPO market shows no signs of slowing down. Strong fundamentals, transparency and robust governance practices continue to keep both regional and international investors engaged. For companies going public, the challenge will be to sustain this momentum by focusing on sustainable growth and maintaining clear, transparent communication – factors that are clearly resonating with the market.

As these trends unfold, MEIRA’s Annual Conference later this year will offer deeper insights into the future of the region’s capital markets. Don’t miss the opportunity to be part of the discussions shaping the next phase of growth.
