‘Our goal is to automate as much of the surrounding work as possible, so we can spend more time talking with investors’: how Block’s IR team made an AI bot

Junina Furigay explains that the tool is likely the first among S&P 500 companies, setting a new precedent for making information available to shareholders

How much time do IR teams spend answering very similar questions from investors? Probably more than they’d like to publicly disclose. But for the team at US payments company Block, freeing up that time was the focus of developing a first-of-its-kind AI tool.

Launching in August, the company’s investor relations bot allows browsers the ability to ‘get instant, cited answers grounded exclusively in Block’s public disclosures’. In simple terms, much like ChatGPT or Claude, the bot will answer queries from users, but only if it can find answers within publicly available information – including shareholder letters, 10Ks, 10Qs and investor day materials – with full citation.

The project, led by investor relations manager Junina Furigay, was started in response to the sheer volume of inbound information requests the team fielded on a regular basis, but has also served as an educational tool for Block’s many employees to learn more about the company. It also helps broaden engagement to a wider range of investors: the tool is available in multiple languages, thanks to instantaneous translation capabilities.
