Amid such a complex environment, IR’s job is to keep things simple
It’s certainly a wild time to be an IRO. While uncertainty is always present in the market, companies are dealing with major surprises far more frequently at the moment. On any day, corporate strategies and financial guidance could be thrown into doubt by a policy announcement, geopolitical shift or another factor.

Off-season engagement highlights shifting views on ESG
Companies ponder how to keep talking about sustainability We’re coming to the end of ‘off season’ – when many companies go out on the road to engage with key institutional investors ahead of their annual shareholder meeting. According to a recent IR Magazine survey, around two thirds of IR teams say they have a program of activities focused on governance issues away from AGM season. It’s a practice that has increased as investors have taken a growing interest in ESG issues, offering the chance for senior management – and in some cases board members – to interact directly with major…

Why the return of Trump heralds a year of change for IR teams
As we kick off 2025, there is one topic that is front of mind for just about every IR team: what impact will the new US administration have on my company, sector and IR activities? At the current time, there are many, many questions – and essentially no clear answers. We can start, however, to sketch out some of the areas where Donald Trump’s second term may bring about change for the IR world. First up, tariffs. Trump campaigned on a promise to raise levies on foreign goods, with a particular focus on China, Canada, Mexico and the European Union.…

‘We’re seeing unusual complexities’: Webinar explores the changing nature of market valuation
Stock markets hit record highs in 2024, powered by falling interest rates and, more recently, expectations for business-friendly polices under US president-elect Donald Trump. The macroeconomic environment, however, feels highly uncertain, with talk of trade wars back on the agenda and geopolitical tensions simmering across the globe. Amid this complex environment, it’s becoming harder to understand what’s driving corporate valuations and the best way for IROs to tell their unique story. IR Magazine recently held a webinar, in partnership with Breakwater Strategy, to explore shifting market dynamics and provide advice on how IR teams can remain agile as they engage…

Small caps don’t plan to change strategy despite Trump’s election win, finds poll
While Donald Trump’s reelection as US President is often viewed as positive for small-cap companies, most do not see the result as an opportunity to rethink their strategy, according to a poll carried out during a recent IR Magazine webinar, held in partnership with One 44 Advisory and Consulting. The event, titled ‘Navigating today’s capital markets: Essential strategies for small-cap companies,’ discussed the shifting capital-markets landscape for smaller issuers and how they can boost their appeal among investors. Click here to watch a replay of the webinar. Of the audience members who voted, 77 percent said the election outcome had…

IR use of AI shifts up a gear thanks to tailored tools, trusted data and a little help from friends
It’s around two years since ChatGPT launched and pushed generative-AI tools to the forefront of just about everyone’s minds. Given that timeframe, you might think that the buzz would be starting to wane. But the packed house for our AI and Technology Forum, held this week in New York, told a different story. Clearly there is still huge hunger to understand the impact of AI on the capital markets and how IR teams can use this tech to be more efficient and effective. Something has changed, though – you don’t want to hear people just talking about the potential of…

As the EU announces CSRD shake-up, our poll shows most firms aren’t ready for implementation
Takeaways from the IR Magazine ESG Integration Forum – Europe, held in London The mood at the ESG Integration Forum – Europe in London this week was upbeat despite the huge challenges that companies face from new regulation, shifting investor sentiment and geopolitical realignments. The attendees – who hold IR, sustainability and governance roles at listed companies – exchanged notes on how ESG-related expectations continue to evolve at a rapid pace, and made a determined effort to focus on the opportunities as much as the risks. Unsurprisingly, the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) was a central focus, with 66 percent…

Trump’s victory may not mean what you think it does for ESG disclosures
While the SEC’s climate rule could be axed, many companies will still need to build out their ESG disclosures Rather than weeks or months of damaging uncertainty, the US presidential election delivered a surprisingly swift and clear verdict this week, with Donald Trump quickly projected as having an unassailable lead over Kamala Harris. That means commentary can now turn to what a Trump second term will look like. For the IR profession, major changes are afoot given that the Republican candidate pledged in July to fire SEC chair Gary Gensler on his first day in office. In the comments, Trump…
