Hulus Alpay to serve as 2013 chairman of NIRI

Hulus Alpay, vice president of investor relations at Medidata Solutions, was elected 2013 chairman of the board of directors of NIRI with a promise to boost international membership and deepen knowledge of the changing global capital markets.

Alpay, a 20-year veteran of investor relations, financial media relations, capital markets, investment research and more, says his time at the helm of the world’s largest IR association will also be marked by an emphasis on keeping up with the accelerating pace of change in global markets.

‘I look forward to helping our members successfully navigate change, drive awareness of the profession’s importance in the modern corporation and, in turn, fuel their own professional success,’ Alpay says in a release.

‘Additional areas of focus during my tenure will include international membership growth, deepening the industry’s knowledge around the continued evolution of the global capital markets and its impact on the US IPO market and, most importantly, inspiring the best and brightest to look at the profession as an exciting area for professional growth and opportunity.’

Alpay will succeed outgoing chairman Derek Cole, the vice president for IR and corporate communications at ARCA biopharma, as of the NIRI annual meeting of members in late November.

‘Hulus brings a tremendous depth of IR professional knowledge through his varied experiences as an IR products and services consultant, IR counselor and as a corporate IR professional,’ comments Jeffrey Morgan, president and CEO of NIRI, in the release.

‘On behalf of the NIRI staff, board and membership, we look forward to having a board chair with such a comprehensive understanding of our profession, and we welcome him to his new role.’

NIRI, which has more than 3,300 members representing more than 1,600 publicly held companies and $9 tn in stock market capitalization, is already familiar with the work of Alpay, who has served as president and board member of its New York chapter.

Alpay, who started his career as a legislative aide for the State of Connecticut writing speeches, is a graduate of the University of Hartford and was awarded an MBA by Monmouth University in 1996.

He has also counseled C-level corporate executives and board members on issues including SOX, corporate governance, Reg FD, management of investor perceptions and expectations, and other crisis situations.

His research positions have involved Merrill Lynch Asset Management and the New York Mercantile Exchange.
