Telecoms company China Unicom won awards for best overall investor relations (large cap), best IR officer (large cap) for Jacky Yung, best IR in the communications sector and best IR in the Hong Kong region.

Real estate developer Sinic Holdings walked away with best overall investor relations (mid-cap), best IR officer (mid-cap) for Venus Zhao, best IR in the financials (including real estate) sector and best IR in the mainland China region.

Three companies picked up two awards each: Kerry Logistics won best IR in the industrials sector and best annual report (mid-cap), CLP Holdings claimed best annual report (large cap) and best ESG materiality reporting (large cap), and Lenovo Group went home with awards for best crisis management and best use of multimedia for IR.

The rising star award went to Calvin Pei, assistant vice president of corporate finance and strategy at PAX Global Technology. This prize is for individuals who have worked in IR for under five years and brought fresh thinking or a unique approach to their role.

As with other IR Magazine Awards events, the prizes are split into two categories. The awards-by-research categories are decided by a survey of buy-side and sell-side professionals who cover companies in the Greater China region (mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan).

The awards-by-nomination categories allow companies to submit entries highlighting their IR work in specific areas, such as annual reports, investor events and technology.

IR Magazine journalists select the short lists from the initial entries. After that, a panel of judges decides the winners. This year the panel of judges featured:
– Tim Human, senior reporter, IR Magazine
– Paul Milon, ESG specialist for Asia Pacific, BNP Paribas Asset Management
– William Tsang, head of research, Chartwell Capital
– Gabriel Wilson-Otto, head of stewardship for Asia Pacific, BNP Paribas Asset Management.

The awards event followed the IR Magazine Forum – Greater China 2020 where a series of panels tackled the issues facing IR teams based in the region. Topics under discussion included ESG best practices, targeting in a virtual world and the role of IR during a pandemic.
