The CFO: ‘IR must have a strong reputation in the market. If there is trust, information flows’ says Iberdrola finance chief

José Sainz Armada, who has been with Iberdrola for more than two decades, shares his take on IR as the Spanish utility is shortlisted for five IR Impact trophies at the upcoming awards in London

Iberdrola is arguably one of Europe’s most successful companies when it comes to IR Impact trophy hauls. Ignacio Cuenca, the energy firm’s long-running head of IR, was one of IR Impact’s 30 IR stars in 30 days series – back in 2018 when we celebrated 30 years of diving into IR and recognizing the highest achievers in the profession.

Fast-forward to 2026 and the Spanish energy giant is once again leading the shortlists for the IR Impact Awards 2026, nominated in five categories, as is Swiss-based office operator International Workplace Group.

As we approach finding out which of Europe’s companies are going to take home awards, we speak to José Sainz Armada, Iberdrola’s CFO, who like Cuenca has spent multiple decades at the company. Here, Sainz Armada discusses everything from how he measures IR success (perhaps Iberdrola keeps a trophy count!), what he looks for from his IR lead and how he tackled some of the biggest challenges of his CFO career.

About the event A year ago, the conversation around AI within investor relations centred on adoption and implementation: which tools to use, how to implement them and how to manage the associated risks.
